An old Arab trading town”

lamuFor many visitors Lamu’s wonderfully layed back atmosphere is simply intoxicating.

Travelers are easily caught up in sleepy days spent on this island that’s a mix of timeless beauty and a new effort to bring a resort feel to it’s lovely coastline.

Lamu is actually the last remaining center of Swahili civilization that was so dominate in the coast region before the arrival of the British in the late 19th century. In the late 1960’s and early 70’s it was also a popular destination for a worldwide hippy culture that flocked to the island for many of the reasons travelers come today.

Lamu in fact has a very rich history that spans over 700 years and even today with it’s designation as a “World Heritage Site” it is finding itself on the verge of change.
